Microsoft Project: You can’t inactivate a task that’s in progress

in Microsoft Project Professional, I have tried to inactivate a task. but, I got the below error:

So that I have also tried to set the Task %Complete to 100% to be Completed but, it still raises the same issue!

Cause

This issue occurs in case you are trying to set a task as inactive that is completed or still in progress.

Solution

To avoid this issue “You can’t inactivate a task that’s in progress“, you should be aware that you can only inactivate tasks that have no any progress recorded (%Complete = 0).

  1. You cannot inactivate completed tasks.
    • Eg: %Complete = 100%
  2. You cannot inactivate tasks that have any progress recorded.
    • Eg: %Complete > 0.

So that, you just make sure that the task is neither completed nor in progress by Setting its %Complete to 0 as shown below:

Note: To be able to set a task as inactive you should use Project Professional, The ability to inactivate tasks is not available in Project Standard.
