Continuing to use SharePoint Foundation 2013 is actually a viable alternative, provided you spend the next three years saving your budget dollars for 2019. SharePoint 2013 comes off extended support in 2023.
Running a trial, having MSDN subscription or using a previous (and possibly soon to be unsupported) version are NO alternatives to 2016 free version….
Alternative is something that you can actually use the way you use the product your replacing, so also in production….
A shame that there is no free version anymore…
